We are looking for a PhD candidate to join the Ruminant Production Progam team, based in Torre Marimon (Caldes de Montbui, Barcelona). We offer the opportunity to be part of an organization with a dynamic, collaborative work environment focused on professional development.

The selected candidate will join the Ruminant Production Programme from IRTA. Approximately half of the doctoral research will be carried out at IRTA Torre Marimon, while the remaining half will take place at INRAE (France), on the campus of the Veterinary Faculty of Toulouse, providing the candidate with a unique international training environment and access to complementary expertise, facilities, and scientific networks. The PhD candidate will be enrolled on the EU CATAXIS project, an interdisciplinary research initiative aiming to unravel the complex biological mechanisms underlying respiratory and digestive diseases in calves raised under commercial farming conditions. The project integrates high-resolution data on the microbiome, pathogen dynamics, mucosal biology, immune responses, neuroimmune regulation, animal physiology, and behaviour to better understand disease susceptibility, resilience, and animal welfare. Specifically, the PhD candidate will:

• Identify resistant and resilient calf phenotypes based on coordinated clinical, microbial, immunological, mucosal, neurophysiological, and behavioural responses.

• Define early-warning biomarkers of respiratory and digestive diseases by integrating multi-omics datasets, physiological indicators, and high-frequency behavioural monitoring.

• Develop predictive models capable of identifying animals at risk before the appearance of overt clinical signs, ultimately supporting precision livestock farming and improved animal welfare.

The thesis is based on the following central hypotheses:

• Resilient calves exhibit coordinated and regulated immune and neuroimmune responses, supported by stable microbial communities, preserved mucosal barrier integrity, and regular behavioural rhythms.

• Respiratory and digestive diseases arise from complex interactions among the host, microbiome, pathogens, and environmental factors that can be captured by integrated systems biology approaches.

This international PhD will provide the candidate with advanced multidisciplinary training in microbiology, immunology, animal behaviour, systems biology, and data integration, while fostering strong collaborations between leading research teams at IRTA and INRAE.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

• Write a PhD thesis and publish scientific papers on the grounds of the PhD project.

• To perform literature review, data collection and management (field and lab), involving statistical analysis.

• To contribute to the scientific production of the research and innovation activities of the research line.

• To collaborate on other projects as part of a team.

Required qualifications and experience

• Candidates must hold one of the following degrees: Veterinary, Science Animal Health, Science Animal Production, or similar and have completed their studies and:

  - a) A Master’s in animal science/animal nutrition/microbiology;

  - b) To be in a position to access a doctoral programme according to the requirements of Catalan universities, i.e. accrediting between 60 and 120 ECTS credits at the official university master's degree level or equivalent.

  - Not to have a previous PhD degree.

• Proficiency in English

• Strong teamwork skills, ability to adapt to multidisciplinary environments and a focus on professional growth and development.

• Driver licence

• Demonstrated experience in matters of Animal Science.

• Demonstrated experience in management and health of calves.

• Gross annual salary in 14 payments: The financial remuneration for the PhD Candidate contract will be 19,656,35€/gross per annum and for the first and second years. For this third year, it will be €21,060,37€/gross per annum and for the fourth year it will be €26,325,47€/gross per annum which will be subject to the corresponding withholdings, pursuant to prevailing regulations, and to the collective employment agreement of IRTA. IRTA will also pay the fees of the doctoral school when receiving the enrolment.

Busquem una persona candidata a un/a doctorand/a per incorporar-se a l’equip del Programa de Producció de Remugants, amb seu a Torre Marimon (Caldes de Montbui, Barcelona). La persona seleccionada s’integrarà al Programa de Producció de Remugants de l’IRTA. Aproximadament la meitat de la recerca doctoral es durà a terme a l’IRTA Torre Marimon, mentre que l’altra meitat tindrà lloc a l’INRAE (França), al campus de la Facultat Veterinària de Tolosa, fet que proporcionarà a la persona candidata un entorn de formació internacional únic i accés a coneixements especialitzats, infraestructures i xarxes científiques complementàries.

La persona doctoranda s’incorporarà al projecte EU CATAXIS, una iniciativa de recerca interdisciplinària que té com a objectiu desxifrar els complexos mecanismes biològics que intervenen en les malalties respiratòries i digestives dels vedells criats en condicions comercials. El projecte integra dades d’alta resolució sobre el microbioma, la dinàmica dels patògens, la biologia de les mucoses, les respostes immunitàries, la regulació neuroimmunitària, la fisiologia animal i el comportament, amb la finalitat de comprendre millor la susceptibilitat a les malalties, la resiliència i el benestar animal.

Concretament, la persona doctoranda haurà de:

• Identificar fenotips de vedells resistents i resilients a partir de respostes clíniques, microbianes, immunològiques, mucosals, neurofisiològiques i conductuals coordinades.

• Definir biomarcadors d’alerta precoç de les malalties respiratòries i digestives mitjançant la integració de dades multiòmiques, indicadors fisiològics i sistemes de monitoratge del comportament d’alta freqüència.

• Desenvolupar models predictius capaços d’identificar animals en risc abans de l’aparició de signes clínics evidents, contribuint així a la ramaderia de precisió i a la millora del benestar animal.

La tesi es basarà en les hipòtesis centrals següents:

• Els vedells resilients presenten respostes immunitàries i neuroimmunitàries coordinades i regulades, sustentades per comunitats microbianes estables, una integritat preservada de la barrera mucosal i patrons de comportament regulars.

• Les malalties respiratòries i digestives sorgeixen d’interaccions complexes entre l’hoste, el microbioma, els patògens i els factors ambientals, que poden ser caracteritzades mitjançant enfocaments integrats de biologia de sistemes.

Aquest doctorat internacional proporcionarà a la persona candidata una formació multidisciplinària avançada en microbiologia, immunologia, comportament animal, biologia de sistemes i integració de dades, alhora que fomentarà una estreta col·laboració entre equips de recerca de referència de l’IRTA i l’INRAE.

Funcions i responsabilitats:

• Redactar una tesi doctoral i publicar articles científics derivats del projecte de doctorat.

• Dur a terme la revisió bibliogràfica, la recollida i la gestió de dades (de camp i de laboratori), incloent-hi l'anàlisi estadística.

• Contribuir a la producció científica de les activitats de recerca i innovació de la línia de recerca.

• Col·laborar en altres projectes com a membre de l'equip de treball.

Requisits i experiència:

• Les persones candidates han d'estar en possessió d'una de les titulacions següents: Veterinària, Ciència i Salut Animal, Ciència i Producció Animal, o una titulació equivalent, i haver finalitzat els estudis, així com complir un dels requisits següents:

  • a) Disposar d'un màster en ciència animal, nutrició animal, microbiologia o un àmbit relacionat.

  • b) Trobar-se en condicions d'accedir a un programa de doctorat d'acord amb els requisits de les universitats catalanes, és a dir, acreditar entre 60 i 120 crèdits ECTS d'un màster universitari oficial o una titulació equivalent.

  • No estar en possessió d'un títol de doctorat previ.

• Domini de l'anglès.

• Sòlides capacitats de treball en equip, habilitat per adaptar-se a entorns multidisciplinaris i orientació al creixement i desenvolupament professional.

• Permís de conduir.
